RETATRUTIDE / PHASE 2A SUBSTUDY / 2024

Retatrutide: a closer look at liver fat

Did liver fat change in participants with obesity and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD)?

Who was studied?

A subset of the phase 2 obesity trial had at least 10% liver fat by MRI. This was part of that parent trial, rather than an independent new obesity cohort.

Participants
98 adults
Duration
24-week primary assessment; 48-week study
Funding
Eli Lilly

What did the study find?

At 24 weeks, average relative liver-fat reductions were 81.4% and 82.4% in the 8 mg and 12 mg groups, versus a 0.3% increase with placebo.

What should you keep in mind?

Relative liver-fat reduction is not the same as percentage points of liver fat. MRI findings do not prove reversal of fibrosis, and later imaging data were incomplete.

Why it matters

The finding suggests a metabolic question worth further study. It does not establish a cure for liver disease or a dosing recommendation.
