TESAMORELIN / PHASE 3 / 2007

Tesamorelin: the pivotal visceral-fat trial

Could stimulating GH release reduce visceral abdominal fat in adults with HIV?

Who was studied?

Adults with HIV and abdominal fat accumulation received the historical 2 mg formulation daily or placebo. Most participants were men.

Participants
412 adults
Duration
26 weeks
Funding
Theratechnologies

What did the study find?

CT-measured visceral fat decreased 15.2% with tesamorelin and increased 5.0% with placebo at 26 weeks. This outcome is distinct from total body-weight loss.

What should you keep in mind?

The population and formulation matter. More tesamorelin participants withdrew because of an adverse event; this trial did not compare five-on/two-off schedules.

Why it matters

A daily, placebo-controlled trial gives the community a reference point, without showing that another formulation or schedule produces the same result.
